It’s Just Water

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like a slug in human form, and your head hurts, and you don’t want to move, and you’re cranky?

So you try a cup of coffee, and that doesn’t help. You try going for a walk and moving around, but that only makes you feel worse. You try some food, but that fixes nothing.

After a few hours of this, you resign yourself to this just being a really bad day. You’ll try again tomorrow, but today just isn’t. your. day.

Then someone hands you a glass of water.

It’s tap water in a plastic cup, but you’ll be damned if it’s not the best water you’ve ever had.

Your headache goes away. You don’t feel like you weigh as much as an elephant anymore. Your mood lightens and all of a sudden you feel like everything is going to be okay.

It was just water.

I’ve had a bumpy couple of days. Too much socializing, work, the steadily rising temperatures, and an intentionally-unplanned trip had me hyperventilating every few hours.

In a move of desperation, I went on a hike, hoping being alone would clear my head.

My head cleared. My breathing was labored only through exercise, not panic. Being able to get away from everyone brightened my mood immeasurably. My upcoming trip looked more like an adventure and less like a death sentence.

It was just a hike.

It was just water.
